Botox
(BOTOX MOLECULES pictured above and below)
Botox injections are used primarily to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. Botox injections use a toxin called onobotulinumtoxinA to temporarily prevent a muscle from moving. This toxin is produced by the bacteria that causes botulism, a type of food poisoning.
Botox was the first drug to use botulinum toxin. Other products now include drugs like abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport) and incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin). All 3 drugs are FDA approved, but vary in molecular weight, protein content, and excipient (vehicle used to deliver the drug)
Possible side effects and complications include:
Pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site
Headache or flu-like symptoms
Droopy eyelid (ptosis) or cockeyed eyebrows
Crooked smile or drooling
You should NOT get Botox injections if you have a history of:
allergies to eggs, egg products, or albumin
significant autoimmune or neurological diseases
pregnancy
